Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogy Society

The Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society was formed in Danville, Virginia in April 1978 as a nonprofit educational society which has as its purpose "to preserve and to share" local records with persons having interest in the Virginia counties of Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania and Halifax and the North Carolina counties of Rockingham, Caswell and Person, and other such Virginia and North Carolina information pertinent to these counties and their inhabitants. Membership is open to individuals, families, libraries, societies and/or corporations. Dues are currently $20.00 per calendar year. Members receive Piedmont Lineages which is published quarterly. The Society's office and search room is currently located in a small room adjacent to the Danville Public Library Genealogy Room and is open to the public on a published schedule when volunteers are available and at other times when prior arrangements have been made. The Society is operated strictly by volunteers with no paid staff. Its sole sources of income are dues, donations and the sale of publications and copies. Income is used entirely for equipment, publications, services and supplies. The Society has websites and is referenced on the Danville Public Library website.

Heritage Books

Heritage Books are published under the name of counties and contain articles written and submitted by volunteers concerning people and significant places in those counties. They are a valuable source for genealogical information. The VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society currently has Heritage Books for:

Vertical Files

The VA/NC Piedmont Genealogical Society Vertical Files consist of genealogical information that the Society has accumulated since its formation in 1978. The information is stored in file folders contained in eleven 4-drawer file cabinets in the Society's search room and is available to the public. The folders are arranged roughly in alphabetical order by surname although some files may be slightly misplaced. The number of folders under the surname is indicated by a number after the surname if there is more than one. Some of the folders contain extensive information while the information in others is limited. Since the information was donated by various people its authenticity should be verified before acceptance. People having genealogical or historical information about families are encouraged to add it to the Vertical Files for use by others seeking information about those families. The Vertical Files currently contain folders for over 2500 surnames. Here is a list of the currently available surnames indexed alphabetically by the first letter of the surname:
